APPLICATION PERIOD CLOSED

            Effective January 1, 2002;    “Each Firefighter hired on or after January 1, 2002 shall be required to establish a residence within the corporate limits of the City of Harrisburg within six (6) months from the date on which the Firefighter completes his/her probationary period. Thereafter, the Firefighter shall be required to maintain a residence within the corporate limits of the City of Harrisburg for the duration of his/her employment with the City of Harrisburg, in accordance with the definition set forth in Section 2-711 of the Codified Ordinances of the City of Harrisburg.

          The city of Harrisburg hires periodically. Your best bet for answers to questions pertaining to what the city intends to do this year is to contact City Personnel Department at 717-255-6475.

          After the Civil Service Board certifies the list the city will only hire from that list. If the city is intending to hire it will generally do so in March or September because of the HACC career classes.   We send our new recruits to the Harrisburg Area Community College that conducts a 12-week career class. A (Public Safety Training) class that begins in March or September.  Cities from all over the state send their new career members there also.   Upon graduation you must be a FF2 and EMT.  Effective January 1, 2002;  “Firefighter hired on or after January 1, 2000 must maintain EMT certification as a condition of their employment”

               We work a 42 hr workweek of two 8-1/2 hr daylights (0730-1600) then 24 hrs off, then two 15-1/2 hr nights (1600 to 0730), then 4 days off.

            Harrisburg is the Capital city of PA.  Living population is about 53,000 with a working pop. of over 150,000. We run three engines and three trucks from 4 houses.
